Hey runners, in today’s newsletter, we’re still unpacking Chicago, and one story keeps getting better.

A year ago Vinny Mauri was fresh out of college and applying for jobs. On Sunday he led the American men through 30K. We sat down with him on the 45-mile training days behind the build, the race shoes he hadn’t picked days out, and why he ditched the pacers and ran on feel. Meanwhile, Jacob Kiplimo explains the problem that cost him his Chicago title and to finish fourth in 2:04:18.

Elsewhere, Patrick Clancy ran Chicago in memory of his three children, 24 minutes faster than his Boston debut. And Big’s Backyard Ultra World Team Championship kicks off October 17, with 1,110 runners starting the same hourly loop around the world at once.

And as always, we round things out with the practical stuff: how to prevent runner’s trots, how to build a shoe rotation, and why the 80/20 rule works.

Medical-Grade Compression, Built for Runners

In 2007, a German triathlete set an IRONMAN course record wearing a pair of bright white CEP knee-highs. The next day, they sold out. Nearly 20 years later, CEP still builds on the medical compression expertise of its parent company, medi. CEP’s progressive+ compression is firmer at the ankle and eases up the calf to help reduce swelling and support your legs mile after mile. That runs from everyday Core Run socks to the Optaspeed BowTech shoe.

A Year Before Chicago, Vinny Mauri Was Applying for Jobs

Fresh out of college and barely running last fall, the Ohioan has since run the fastest marathon debut by an American and led the U.S. men through 30K in Chicago, and he thinks the people closest to him saw it coming.

Everything You Need to Know About the Big’s Backyard Ultra World Team Championship

On Oct. 17, 1,110 runners will start the same hourly 4.167-mile loop at once around the world, and every yard each of them finishes counts toward a national total that Belgium set at 1,147 in 2024.

Vinny Mauri Had Not Picked His Chicago Race Shoes Days Before the Race

He was still weighing two ASICS models and had not settled what would go in his bottles, and once the race started he left the pacers behind and ran it on feel.

Patrick Clancy Runs the Chicago Marathon in Memory of His Three Children

Clancy ran 3:35:29 on Sunday, 24 minutes faster than his Boston debut, five weeks after a judge declared a mistrial in his ex-wife's murder trial.

Runner’s Trots: How To Prevent Runner’s Diarrhea

Runner’s trots is a very common occurrence; at least one time or another, almost every runner has had to dodge into a shop to use the bathroom or dart into the nearby woods to find cover to relieve themselves.

But is this avoidable?

Vinny Mauri Breaks Down the 45-Mile Day Behind His Chicago Build

Two 50-minute treadmill reps in the morning and four 20-minute reps in the afternoon added up to close to three times the work of a typical Norwegian double threshold day.

Jacob Kiplimo Says a Hamstring Problem Cost Him His Chicago Title

The defending champion was level with Amos Kipruto on course record pace at 30K before he felt it, and he ran the last 12K in pain to finish fourth in 2:04:18.
