Hey runners, in today’s newsletter, New York has lost two of its biggest names.
Sifan Hassan and Fiona O’Keeffe have both withdrawn from the New York City Marathon. Hassan says illness held back her training, while O’Keeffe had surgery last week to repair a torn hamstring tendon. Neither has raced since New York a year ago.
Elsewhere, Nike’s sold-out After Dark 10K will run across the runway at London City Airport on Saturday, and Amanal Petros headlines the fastest men’s field Frankfurt has ever assembled. Amsterdam also returns this weekend, where organizers have painted a blue racing line through the corners to help Geofry Kipchumba defend the fastest marathon ever run on Dutch soil.
And as always, we round things out with the practical stuff: how to start running from scratch, the science of the warm-up, and a complete three-week marathon taper.

NYRR Trailblazers will take teenagers in grades 10 to 12 from no running experience to the Percy Sutton Harlem 5K next summer, and NYRR announced it alongside a report showing its membership has passed 100,000 for the first time.
Whether it was your 5th-grade soccer coach, your college track coach, or your running group buddies, if you’ve been participating in sports of any kind, you’ve likely heard the phrase, “You gotta warm up!”
While this is a common understanding, the science of the warm-up is less understood.
Blackstone, one of six women who sat down at the start of the 1972 New York City Marathon, enters the NYRR Hall of Fame with George Hirsch and Percy Sutton, and Galloway will receive the Abebe Bikila Award eight months after his death.
The European champion is 27 seconds off Bashir Abdi's European record heading into the Oct. 25 race, and 2018 winner Meskerem Assefa has cleared a visa delay to join the women's field.
The 44-year-old finished in 45 days, 3:11:28 on Wednesday morning in Queens, New York, extending the longest winning streak by a man in the race's history.
Enter your goal and corral, and get a pace for every kilometer of Toronto’s waterfront course, built from the splits of nearly 7,000 finishers and adjusted for race-day weather.
Geofry Kipchumba returns to defend the fastest marathon ever run on Dutch soil, and organizers have painted a blue racing line through the corners to help him go quicker. Here are the start times, how to watch and track runners, the forecast and the elite fields.
The 97-gram racer Sabastian Sawe wore to run 1:59:30 in London joins the list three years after the first Adios Pro Evo made it, and it goes back on sale in the U.S. on Oct. 29.
