Is the marathon lottery fair?

Newsletter #837: Saturday, 13th June 2026

Hey runners, in today's newsletter, the sport keeps reshuffling at every level, from the youngest stars on the track to the friendships outlasting nearly everyone watching.

The NCAA Outdoor Championships delivered one of the wildest weeks of college track in recent memory. Adaejah Hodge ran 10.63 to wipe out Sha'Carri Richardson's collegiate 100m record, a 26-year-old freshman won the women's 10,000m, and a 20-year-old from Auburn broke the 110m hurdles world record in the prelims. In less celebratory news, Ethiopian world champion Gudaf Tsegay has been hit with a four-month doping ban after testing positive for Letrozole, a drug that also happens to be one of the most widely prescribed fertility treatments in the world.

Cape Town's arrival as the first African World Marathon Major is official, and we've taken a closer look at what it actually changes and the harder questions that come next. With London pulling in 1.3 million applicants and Copenhagen drawing more than 80,000 entries for 35,000 spots in 2027, the bigger debate about whether the marathon lottery system is still fair is heating up too.

And on a lighter note, 88-year-old best friends Nola and Maggie are still lining up to race each other in the 60 meters in Darwin, and Vermont City Marathon winner Ryan Smith ran the entire race solo on his debut and qualified for the 2028 Olympic Trials in the process. Two Olympic triathlon champions, Alex Yee and Cassandre Beaugrand, are also heading to the Monaco Diamond League track on July 10.

And as always, we round things out with the practical stuff: what to actually eat before a long run, how long it really takes to train for an ultra, and 10 essential post-run stretches that belong in every runner's cooldown.

Running is Healthier than Cycling? Jimmy Whelan's Switch to Pro Running & 2028 Olympics Chase

Jimmy Whelan raced the Giro d'Italia, wore the EF Education First jersey in the World Tour, and beat Pogačar in a U23 race. Then he broke his pelvis, lost his contract, and messaged his boss from a hospital bed in Europe to say he was done. Less than a year later, he ran a 61-minute half marathon on his professional running debut at Valencia, 13th on the Australian all-time list. He's now signed with Salomon, based in Barcelona, coached by Andy Henderson (also coach to Phil Sessemann), and openly chasing the Australian Olympic marathon team for LA 2028.
