Hey runners, in today’s newsletter, New York is almost here.
First off, if you're going to be in town and haven't already, grab one of the last tickets to our live show on Saturday afternoon! We're going to have Emma Grace Hurley on stage with us (and maybe a couple other surprise guests!)
We previewed the men’s and women’s elite races in a bonus episode of The Running Story, and we’ve also got a mile-by-mile breakdown of the course, which takes a new line through the Bronx this year before that long climb up Fifth Avenue.
Elsewhere, the Zhengzhou Marathon has banned a runner for three years after videos showed him towing a nine-year-old boy roped to his waist.
And as always, we round things out with the practical stuff: eight strength exercises for marathoners, what to eat before a morning run, and whether you should run the day before a race.
On Sunday morning, we’re streaming a live watch-along show from the Tracksmith Trackhouse in Brooklyn. It starts at 8:00 a.m. ET, ahead of the professional women’s start at 8:35 a.m. and the men’s at 9:05 a.m. Katelyn Tocci, Michael Doyle and Alex Cyr will follow both races to Central Park with live updates and analysis, and Jessy Carveth will report from the finish line. Think of it as a second-screen experience to pair with the race's live TV broadcast, designed for the true running nerd!
Hellen Obiri returns to defend her course record, Benson Kipruto defends a title he won by three hundredths of a second, and Conner Mantz leads the strongest American field in years. Set a reminder now and we’ll let you know the moment we go live:
The 2026 TCS New York City Marathon is this Sunday, November 1, and Michael Doyle and Jessy Carveth preview the men’s and women’s elite races in this bonus episode of The Running Story.
The route crosses five bridges on its way through all five boroughs, takes a new line through the Bronx this year, and saves a long climb up Fifth Avenue for the final miles before Central Park.
Talbi ran 2:03:45 at Boston in April, the fastest marathon by an American, and lines up against Conner Mantz and defending champion Benson Kipruto on Nov. 1.
Organizers say every car was taken from a lot the race never approved. One runner says race staff sent him there, and another says hers was towed from an official lot.
The 34-year-old from Phoenix broke Shalane Flanagan's American course record at Boston in April and arrives in New York as the fastest American woman on the start list.
Organizers canceled the man's result and barred him for three years after videos showed the child roped to him on the course in Henan province, where no one under 18 is allowed to start.
Reigning world marathon champion and Tokyo Olympic gold medalist Peres Jepchirchir has been provisionally suspended by the Athletics Integrity Unit after an out-of-competition test came back positive for EPO, six weeks before her Sydney Marathon win. On this episode of The Running Story, Michael Doyle and Jessy Carveth break down what the doping case means for her titles, for Sydney and for trust in elite marathoning.
