Hey runners, in today's newsletter, a big weekend of championship racing is upon us.
The first World Athletics Ultimate Championship opens Friday in Budapest with $10 million on the line, 28 titles to settle, and no medals to award. A week later, the World Road Running Championships hit Copenhagen, where three global titles go up on the road mile, 5K and half marathon, with 496 elites and 65,000 amateurs racing the same courses.
Elsewhere, Comrades has dropped its Athletics South Africa license for the centenary. And in Prague, Kenyan runner Kiprono led into the finish straight only for a departing TV car to lead him off course.
And as always, we round things out with the practical stuff: whether to run with a cold, seven bodyweight glute moves, and how to actually use Zone 2 training.
Alex is coming off the biggest mileage week of his life (97 miles / 154K!) and just signed up for a surprise race, while Alexis is nursing a bee sting and celebrating a new 5K race-pace PR. Then we get into the big one: should marathons have stricter time cutoffs, or should courses stay open all day for anyone who wants to finish? We debate both sides: city logistics, injuries and disabilities, qualifying standards, and why the media loves a "last place finisher" story a little too much.
Three global titles go on the road mile, the 5K and the half marathon on Sept. 19 and 20, with 496 elite athletes entered and 65,000 amateurs racing the same courses.
World Athletics published its final entry lists on Monday without her, and the Budapest long jump field is still eight jumpers. She also comes off the card for Athlos London ten days later.
General entries for the June 13 centenary open Wednesday with the field capped at 28,000. The race has replaced most of what the national federation used to provide, though not the qualifier.
You don’t need a gym to build strong, powerful glutes. These bodyweight exercises target your hips, glutes, and core to improve strength, stability, and running performance—anytime, anywhere.
The three-night meet opens Friday at the stadium Budapest built for the 2023 World Championships, with $10 million to hand out, 28 titles to settle and no medals to award.
The draw opens Sept. 16 and runs for two weeks. Copenhagen is expanding the field to 45,000, its biggest yet, and still expects more applicants than places.
Kiprono led into the finish straight at the Birell 10K Night Race on Saturday, ran off the course behind a departing television vehicle, and got back on it in time to finish third in 27:18. RunCzech has apologized and will pay him the winner's prize money anyway.
The Nike Pegasus Plus 2 is the brand's latest workout shoe. It has lots of bells and whistles that make it go fast: Zoom X foam in the midsole, an AirZoom pod, and a noticeable rock-forward profile. But its secret weapon, says senior editor Alex Cyr, is its unexpected comfort and cushioning. Unlike its predecessor, the Pegasus Plus 1, the 2 feels good on the feet, and can easily guide you through long workouts without battering your legs. Watch our full review on Youtube.
