Hey runners, in today's newsletter, the European Championships are around the corner.

Athletics runs August 10 to 16 in Birmingham, and we've mapped out every track final and marathon day by day. Meanwhile, Hagos Gebrhiwet, the second-fastest 5,000m runner ever, makes his marathon debut in Sydney on August 30.

Elsewhere, Jakob Ingebrigtsen reckons he can break El Guerrouj's 1500m world record, with one condition. And we've taken a hard look at trail running's drug testing gap.

And as always, we round things out with the practical stuff: cycling vs running, a two-week half marathon taper, and what 30 minutes of running a day actually does for you.

Can I Run 5k in Under 30 Minutes?

Breaking 30 minutes for 5k is the first time goal of many beginning runners. Here, new runner Alexis D'Souza Cyr tries to dip under the mark in her first-ever 5k time trial. Follow along as she battles through the kilometres, and comments on her attempt. Alexis co-hosts Marathon Handbook's newest podcast, For Better or for Worse, with her husband Alex Cyr, who paces her here. In this week's episode, they discuss Alexis' time trial in more depth, what she did to achieve her goal, and which new running goal she's set for the fall.

Your Track and Marathon Schedule for the 2026 European Championships in Birmingham

Athletics runs August 10 to 16 at Alexander Stadium. Here is every track round and final plus both marathons, day by day, with the field, combined and race walk events stripped out. All times BST, finals in bold.

Trail Running Has the Prize Money. But Does It Have the Drug Testing?

The sport's biggest races now pay five-figure purses and back their winners with professional contracts. Only a handful test for doping at all, and almost none test athletes out of competition, where the serious cheating would hide.

Cycling Vs Running: Which Is The Better Choice?

We'll explore which is better with regards to cardio fitness, muscle growth, calories burned, weight loss, and injury risk.

Half Marathon Taper: The Evidence-Based 2-Week Plan

Here's how to adjust those final weeks of half marathon prep, so you're primed come race day.

Here's a healthy habit to add to your routine.

The Sydney Marathon’s Most Interesting Runner Has Never Run One

Hagos Gebrhiwet, the second-fastest 5,000m runner in history, makes his marathon debut in Sydney on Aug. 30. What he has done on the track predicts surprisingly little about how it will go.

Mohamed Lahna Ran 300 Miles Across the Mojave to Finish His Triathlon Across America

The three-time Paralympian capped a roughly 3,300-mile triathlon across the United States with a 300-mile run from Las Vegas to Los Angeles, reaching Venice Beach on July 29 after 47 days and raising more than $166,000 for charity.

Jakob Ingebrigtsen Says He Can Break the 1500m World Record, With One Condition

Rewatching his fourth-place Paris Olympic 1500m on the RunWise podcast, the Norwegian argued that the shape which let him lead that race would be enough to break Hicham El Guerrouj's 3:26.00 world record, if he can recreate it and get a pacer.

Her First 5K Time Trial Shocked Us Both | For Better or For Worse

Alexis just ran her first-ever 5K time trial and blew past everyone's predictions with a 28:53. In this episode of For Better or For Worse, Alex and Alexis break down the splits, the pre-race chaos (forgotten cameras, a Diet Pepsi "fueling strategy," and a rookie pacing mistake), and what it revealed about how hard Alexis can actually push.
